Who's this soms guy?

ABOUT SOMS (SOMETIMES)

Soms is Dutch for sometimes — a word that captures the unpredictability, contradictions and small moments that make up everyday life. The SOMS series is here to make you pause, sometimes smile, sometimes think, and simply enjoy the moment. More about the origine, you may find under 'projects'.

We all have an urge to compare, categorise and make sense of the world. But life doesn’t come in clear lines. We each live in our own reality, our own little bubble, shaped by our experiences, choices and ways of seeing.

SOMS celebrates all those different bubbles. Because sometimes you know, sometimes you don’t. Sometimes you understand what you’re doing, sometimes you think you do, and sometimes you’re just glad you’re doing anything at all.

SOMS is a celebration of the choices, contradictions and unexpected moments that make life what it is. It invites you to let go of the need to have everything figured out — and to find something joyful, strange or recognisable along the way.

SOMS is active in The Netherlands, China and Taiwan.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Merijn Kavelaars (1985, The Netherlands) is a multidisciplinary artist who has been working across painting and installation for more than 15 years. His distinctive visual language is characterised by bold lines, vibrant colours and organic shapes, combined in playful and unexpected compositions.

His intuitive, self-taught practice is rooted in experimentation and an instinctive approach to arranging and layering forms, colours and ideas. In his site-specific projects, these elements often extend beyond the canvas to envelop entire spaces, inviting audiences to move freely through the work and experience it from different perspectives.

At the heart of Kavelaars’ practice is the interaction between these elements — creating immersive visual worlds that invite viewers to look, wander, fantasise and discover new meanings.

Kavelaars is based in Amsterdam and has lived, worked and participated in residencies in Mexico City (Mexico), Shanghai (China), Teheran (Iran), Hong Kong and Taiwan. His work is held in private collections worldwide.
